Riding
the bus has become the safest way
to get to school, even safer than
walking. Researchers examined the
ways children get to school and
found that school buses account
for 25% of all trips but only
2% of children's deaths in school-related traffic accidents, making
them the safest form of transportation.
Teenage drivers
account for only 14% of trips, but
55% of the accidents.
Each
year about 800 children are killed
in motor vehicle crashes during
the school year: 450 students
are killed by teenage drivers while only 5
students are killed riding in a school
bus; 15 students are killed while getting
on or off the bus by passing motorists.
